Larry Orth and the late Ed Stefureak will be receiving induction into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend in Battleford.
Orth was born April 11, 1950, in Esterhazy, SK., starting his baseball career in 1961 and continuing to the present, 2011. Stefureak had a hand in developing local baseball talent in the 1968 season.
During Orth's time in baseball, he had contributed to the game of baseball in many local areas where he lived in Saskatchewan, in many capacities. That included competition as a player, a coach/manager, umpire, umpire clinician, umpire mentor and administrator.
His contributions extended to the regional and national levels. He represented the province of Saskatchewan at the National level, serving on committees with Baseball Canada and a Director of the National Association. As a player, Orth played in the Minor baseball program in Langenburg from 1961 through 1972. In 1989-1990 he coached the Watrous PeeWee Team-Provincial finalists. He began umpiring in 1982 in the minor and senior level baseball, and remains an SBA registered umpire, and continues working the minor leagues. In 1992, Orth umpired the Saskatchewan Summer Games in Prince Albert, SK. In 1994 saw him umpire at the National Bantam Championships in Kelowna, B.C. and he umpired at the Canada Cup,[midget Selects] at Stonewall, Manitoba. He attained level 3 and National level 4 Umpire status and attained nationally certified senior course conductor status. Since 1992, he's has conducted Level 1-4 umpire clinics in the province. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Louis Slotsve Mentorship Program in Saskatoon, SK.
In Administration, Larry participated and contributed to numerous events as a committee member, an organizing host, and an umpire director He held numerous positions in baseball organizations as director, president, vice-president, chairman and supervisor. He was a member of the board of directors for Baseball Canada in 2008 and 2009, and from 2008 to the present is a member of the strategic planning committee, and was Chef de Mission for Saskatchewan Teams. Larry was the recipient of Zone 5 Sports Leadership Award for his contribution to umpiring.
Orth and Stefureak will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball HOF at the 27th Annual Induction Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Battleford, SK.
