The season is going to go on a little longer for the Kozie Drywall Peewee Yorkton Terriers thanks to an overtime goal scored with the season on the line.
It took four periods to do it but the Kozie Drywall Terriers are off to the 'A' side final in provincial playoff hockey action. They will take on the Moose Mountain Wild on Friday night, said Ed Zawatsky, head coach.
In the final game (game 3) of the second round of playoffs played over the weekend against Moose Jaw, Yorkton squeaked out a 4-3 overtime winner when Carson Welke found the back of the net at 8:29 of overtime. Both Moose Jaw and Yorkton were even at a game apiece heading into Saturday's showdown where the winner advances to the third round.
Both teams got going early in the contest.
Three first period goals from the Terriers were matched by two from the Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday night at the Kinsmen Arena.
The visitors would strike first, at 12:29 of the first when Kyle Arndt scored unassisted. Yorkton answered back with two quick goals in less then two minutes.
Brayden and Carson Miller both tallied. Assists went to Carson and MacKenzie Welke.
Kylan Shea and Zach Andrusiak helped out on Carson Miller's goal, making the score 2-1.
Moose Jaw tallied to tie the game when Eric Soar made it 2-2, but Andrusiak notched his second point of the game with under a minute to go with Shea drawing the lone assist.
The teams played through a scoreless middle frame. "Their goalie really got strong in the third period," said Zawatsky, talking about Moose Jaw netminder Thomas Martineau. "It was really tight."
A third Warrior goal with time running out in regulation time tied it at 3-3 and sent in into overtime.
Welke notched his second point of the game to win it for the home side.
Zawatsky said the bench erupted following the goal.
"We advance to the 'A' side final against the Moose Mountain Wild. When we scored, they all jumped over the boards pretty quick. Everyone's a little bit tired."
The Kozie Drywall Terriers now move onto Moose Mountain, whom they'll play in Carlyle on Friday, said Zawatsky. Moose Mountain finished six points higher then Yorkton in the regular season.
Moose Mountain earned the right to advance following their series win over the Swift Current Broncos.
Although not confirmed as of press time, the Peewees could play game 2 Saturday night in Yorkton at the Kinsmen, he said.
