Daniels' Discusses Golf Discs

There is no shortage of technological development and innovation going into golf discs these days. Various companies have patented technology they feel gives their discs an advantage, which in turns gives the player an edge.

And of course players, whether beginners, or seasoned pros, are all looking for anything that might improve their skill.

Ching is one of the companies which incorporates a patented technology into its line of discs, and in this case their secret is rather obvious the moment you pick up a Ching disc.

"CHING® Golf Discs are unique in the industry; we've built upon previous spoiler technology and introduced our own Patented D.R.A.F.T.Systems for predictability and distance. Rather than a static, disruptive feature like a raised thumb track or groove around the entire disc, we've explored recessed, individual contours that dynamically respond to the speed of the spinning disc. Focused drag when and where you need it, to resist hi-speed turnover - but less so when it's time for glide," details the company website.

So what does that exactly mean?

In layman's terms Ching discs have a series of nine, roughly thumb-shaped depressions of slightly varying size around the outer edge of the discs. There is likely aerodynamic influences at play because of the depressions, but ultimately, as a player it comes down to how the discs work on the golf course.

In the case of Ching, you're going to like what they do in action.

To begin with, Ching has packaged three of its discs, a driver, midrange, and approach & putt disc, and sell them in a convenient package which is targeted at the beginner golfer. Having three discs which all have the same feel in-hand is certainly a bonus as you begin exploration of the sport.
In the case of the Ching discs the depressions make a perfect placement position for your thumb and makes gripping your Ching very comfortable.

The three disc set starts with the Velocity driver.

The Velocity launches from the hand smoothly, and holds a steady flight pattern, with it rarely climbing too high to be buffeted by the wind. The level flight over the course has the velocity holding straight on most throws, and that is a must as a beginner who doesn't want to spend a lot of time trying to adjust the release point to straighten the trajectory.

It is suggested players can 'dial in' their throw by adjusting the grip position -- that's back to which of the nine depressions is best for your thumb -- so head to the practice tee and spend some time experimenting.

The Precision is the midrange flyer of the trio. It has the same nine-point excelerator design, and like the driver it flies straight.

This is the disc of the three which won me over initially. On approach shots, with reasonable aim the Precision goes to the basket with just a slight final fade, and settles in flat, which reduces those annoying feet lost to a rolling disc.

The Precision is the Ching disc which took me back to the Velocity for more work until I got it flying right. The result both are likely permanent residents in the golf bag.

And that brings us to the JuJu approach & putt member of the Ching triumvirate.

Putting comfort is always important and the thumb placement on the JuJu makes you feel in control of the throw. It helps when you do make the throw the JuJu is a straight flier with only a slight fade. It's deadly on the short game and will likely remain a favoured option as you boldly go for the chains from longer distances.

As a sort of 'tuned-set' having all three disc options with the same basic 'feel and grip' the Ching offering is an ideal choice for beginners, but the discs offer enough playability to keep the discs in use as your game grows.
