The McDonald's Novice hockey tournament was played over the weekend at both Yorkton arenas, going from Friday at 4:30 p.m., to Sunday night and saw games get played at both the Kinsmen Arena and the Gallagher Centre.
The Yorkton Clean Spot Terriers and Frame Tech Terriers advanced to the final game of the 'A' side and concluded the tournament.
The Clean Spot team came out on top with a 7-3 win.
Included in the tournament were 16 teams, 11 of which came from outside of Yorkton.
Melfort, Langenburg, Roblin, Regina (2), Swan River, Humboldt, Melville, Russell, Theodore and Nipawin were all represented.
Yorkton teams made up the other five that played.
The Clean Spot team and Frame Tech teams played in the 'A' final, Melfort and Nipawin played in the 'B' final, Langenburg beat Russell in the 'C' side final, and the Yorkton Thorsness Terriers beat the Carlet Farm's Terriers, 10-0 in the 'D' final.
Following the 'A' final, coach Trevor Herzog said that teams usually win games when both of the top two lines learn to function as a unit.
The Clean Spot Terriers never trailed en route to a convincing 7-3 win as they took a 4-1 lead early in the first period. "Both lines are doing really well, we have a really strong first line. The second line is keeping up," he said. As for the tournament, his team managed to go undefeated. They didn't lose any of their games and there was some "great competition".
He credits his coaching staff of Jeff Bahrey, Curtis Pelletier and Darrell Sobkow.
They opened the tournament with a close 5-4 win over the Melfort Mustangs Friday evening at the Kinsmen Arena. Their first action Saturday morning saw them skate all over Langenburg, 11-4. In the other match, Swan River edged the Sharks of Regina, 4-3; winners of each would meet up in the 'A' side semi final Saturday night. Yorkton won 7-2 and met Swan River, Yorkton winning, 7-2.
That win put the Clean Spot team into the 'A' final
The Frame Tech team started their tournament action by going into overtime with the Humboldt Broncos, coming out on top in one of the higher scoring games, 9-8. In the other opening match, the Regina Barons knocked off the Melville Ice by a 9-2 count to set up a quarter final match with Yorkton Frame Tech.
Yorkton beat Regina 7-4, advancing to the 'A' side semi final where they would meet up with Theodore, who had just come off a 9-5 beating of the Russell Rams. Yorkton beat Theodore 8-6 in the semis which put them into the final against the Clean Spot team.
