Bulldogs looking for a goalie

The 2011 version of the Yorkton Bulldogs lacrosse team is beginning to take shape however the team is currently looking for a second goaltender once the season begins later next month, said Joe Choptuik, head coach of the team.

He said that allthough it's a little early to determine what the team will look like when the season opens, the strengths of the team are up to the players to decide what they want to look like.

"I guess it's up to them," he said, adding that "it's only going to get better.

Last season, the team placed second overall in the Tier II championships where they fell in Saskaton. this year, he said he's hoping for a Tier I finish.

Following their first practice of the season which was held at the Gallagher Centre, an impressive number turned out for their first run of the season.

About 14 players and one goaltender took part, however Choptuik said he is hoping to land one more goalie before the season starts.

He said the league allows until the first two weeks of the season before each member team must finalize their lineups.

Teams competing in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League include: Estevan, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina Rifles, Regina Riot, Saskatoon Smash, Saskatoon Steelers and the Yorkton Bulldogs.

New for this year, the PGLL has started up a senior league. Last season, Assiniboia played in the junior league with Yorkton but has since moved up to play senior.

Other teams playing in the senior league include the Regina Heat and the Saskatoon Brewers.

The Bulldogs have graduated a handful of players under the age restriction of playing in the junior league, said Choptuik. Not returning this season are: Brandon Wizniak, Geoff Jones, Robbie Kaczur and goaltender Travis Buckle. Choptuik said he hopes that Brendan Turberfield will join the team sometime in May and is expected to miss the early going of the season.

The 2011 Bulldogs will open the year in Regina where they will open up with two games in Regina. On May 15, they play the Riot. On May 19. its Yorkton at the Rifles.

The team opens up at home on May 28 when they entertain the Moose Jaw Mustangs. Choptuik said the location of the game is unknown, but will be either the Kinsmen Arena or the Gallagher Centre.

To get ready for the season, he said the team is looking for help in all areas of the team, from volunteers to players to sponsors. He said the cost to play in 10 league games, plus playoffs is $150 which also includes registration through Saskatchewan Lacrosse.
