The lacrosse Bulldogs played twice over the weekend, road dates in Saskatoon, where they took on the Saskatoon Smash Saturday and the Steelers on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Choptuik, head coach, said they played alright but was concerned that their strong efforts are not as complete as they could have been.
"We played four of six periods," he said, literally as he was returning from a road trip.
He wasn't upset, but wasn't overly thrilled about the lacrosse results, either. Yorkton played well in parts of both games, but they either fell short in the early going, or they fell apart in the middle.
"We played strong in the third period," he told Yorkton This Week, referring to the Saturday game against the second-place Smash. That period saw them score three goals after disappointing efforts in the opening two periods, Choptuik said.
He said they trailed 4-1 after the opening period on Saturday against the Smash, who are currently at the top of the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League standings.
The Smash opened up an 11-3 league following the second period and went on to a 13-7 victory.
"Through the whole game, Brendon Turberfield scored six goals," said Choptuik.
Justin Genaille also tallied and also had five assists.
Choptuik said the third period effort was "strong" but in reference to the opening two periods, he offered a simple explanation: "Our guys didn't want the ball."
The second game of the weekend saw the Bulldogs take on the Saskatoon Steelers and beat them 6-3.
"It was three good periods," Choptuik told YTW late on a Sunday night following the Bulldogs' second 'w' of the season.
"It was a good first period. They (Saskatoon) went into the dressing room up 1-0."
They played lacrosse," Choptuik offered sounding quite pleased. "We beat them to the ball".
It was a good change from the loss the day before, he said.
"On Saturday-they were spectators," he said in comparison to the way Yorkton played over the weekend. They were "doing what you're supposed to be doing."
Yorkton now sports a modest record of 2-4-2. "They all played well again."Goaltender Louden Choptuik did what he had to do, too, adds coach Choptuik.
"I would say 'yes they did'," when asked if the Steelers likely outshot his Bulldogs.
Yorkton's next game has them playing at home on Thursday night (June 16). It comes against a team Yorkton has both lost to and tied (the protest game from last month).
"If our guys play well, it will be a good game," insists Choptuik, who added that as of late, the middle frame has been Yorkton's strongest.
