The Bongo 16U boys' volleyball team took to Saskatoon for the weekend to compete in the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association's provincial championship.

The team played in five matches and came out of the tournament as bronze medalists, says Darren Teneycke, coach of the team.

The Bongos played against one of the more powerful volleyball clubs Teneycke said he's seen when they played the Moose Jaw Element in the semi finals and dropped both sets, 25-14 and 25-23.

Teneycke said that Moose Jaw has always been tough to play against and provincials was no different.
"Moose Jaw was a little more consistent. We lacked (it)," observed Teneycke.

"We did ourselves in against Regina (green)."

The Bongos played Regina in the quarter finals and lost both sets, 25-17 and 25-19.

In the bronze medal game, they played and beat Wadena on the strength of 25-12 and 25-19 set victories.

According to Teneycke, that was exactly the outcome they were hoping for, adding that Moose Jaw went on to win the gold medals.

"We were hoping to medal. The silver (medal) was within our reach. We finished fourth in the Asics Cup so a medal was important."

Other games they played in at Saskatoon included games against the Prince Albert Smashing Bananas, whom the Bongos beat 25-18 and 25-21. They also played the Regina Cougars (gold), whom they lost to in the round robin in two straight sets. In the quarter finals, beat Regina Cougars green handily, 25-11 and 25-12.

In the bronze medal game, they lost the opening set to Wadena 23-25 but rebounded to win the next two by scores of 25-14 and 15-7.

Teneycke said the way his team was able to come out and play was indicative of the way the season went.
"Yes, very happy," he said.

Although the season is now done for his team, they are going to skip out of the western Canadians.

"Everybody played well. the level of skill within the players (was good)."
