A win is a win. It doesn't matter who it comes against, where it comes, or how wide a margin of victory it is. Nobody seems to care who they beat anymore, as long as the end result of it is two points in the win column.
Whenever a team beats someone who is ranked lower then they are in the standings, rarely will you ever hear the coach of the winning team say something like: "Yeah we knew we were going to beat those guys. This was an easy 2 points in the win column. We knew we were going to win no doubt about it."
Two local teams pulled off fairly big wins for themselves heading back to last Thursday night and ending this past Sunday night.
Thursday night had the AAA Yorkton Harvest playing a game that was important simply because it was their only game of the week.
They had played before on Jan. 16, but between then and now, the Harvest only had two scheduled matchups. That's two hockey games in a time span of 11 days. At this time of year, that is not easy.
Yorkton beat Tisdale that Thursday night, so essentially, they picked up all possible points available to them. They also jumped up a little bit in the standings.Yorkton head coach Graham Garrett didn't say it was an absolutely essential victory for them, but it was big because he said he was happy with everything they did, especially in the first and last periods.
The Harvest have to keep on winning if they want any hopes of securing a playoff spot before the final date of the regular season, which happens to be Feb. 20 at home.
This past Sunday night, the Yorkton Terriers of the SJHL played host to the Notre Dame Hounds. Usually Notre Dame has a solid reputation in hockey and on the football field.
That reputation did not show itself Sunday night. Yorkton opened up a 2-0 lead after one period, then allowed the 2-1 goal, but then responded with five more goals to close out the second period, leading 7-1.
Yorkton apparently went into the game with expectations of playing against a team that supposedly could take them down. They played like it to, meaning that one play, or one bounce, could have set the tone for the Hounds early. As it turned out, Yorkton got those bounces and would eventually force a Notre Dame goaltending change during the second period.
The Tuesday before was a different story. Melfort was the opponent. They are currently in the middle of the pack in the Bauer Conference. Melfort had three different leads in that game and won by a 5-3 final.
Regardless of who the favourite happens to be, no win is a guaranteed win.In minor hockey action, also over the weekend, it was an underdog Yorkton midget team going up against a favoured Moose Jaw team, where Moose Jaw apparently did what the Harvest and Terriers didn't do.
