All roads led to Veregin on June 24 for the 74th annual shishliki barbecue held by the Veregin recreation board.

The fires were started at 8 a.m. according to Dereck Wolkowski, a volunteer who has helped with the event for 鈥減robably 10 years.鈥 Under a sky of mixed sun and cloud, the crowd began to line up around 11 a.m. for a noon start.

Planning to cook and serve up approximately 1,200 pounds of meat during the day, Wolkowski said the barbecue fires would burn till 鈥渢he meat runs out.鈥

The Kamsack River Valley Archery Club (RVAC) was set up inside the Veregin rink with games and activities for the younger crowd to enjoy, and were running a fundraiser as well with raffle prizes and 50/50 draw.

鈥淲e do this every year with lots of volunteer help,鈥 said Jeff Bloudoff, secretary-treasurer of the Veregin rec board. 鈥淭hanks to all our volunteers, who are too numerous to mention, this year has been another big success. It went very well. We had a few showers during the day but nothing serious.

鈥淎s in past years, we had people attend from many different places. If they are in the area visiting they stop by for the shishliki. Every year is special.

鈥淎ll the meat was cooked and served and we are looking forward to next year,鈥 he said.

Jason Chernoff is president of the rec board and Aaron Chernoff is vice-president.
