Paul Pugh, oldest fan of the Canora Sterlings of the СÀ¶ÊÓƵeastern Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, was honoured on his 85th birthday when Craig Senkow, team captain, presented him with a hockey stick autographed by team members, in recognition of his support of the Sterlings and minor hockey. At right is Roger Keller, Sterlings’ equipment manager.

LARGEST STEER Feb. 5

A purebred Holstein steer purchased by Ralph Cockerill of Roblin, Man. was the largest steer ever to pass through the Norquay Auction Mart. A product of artificial insemination, the 2,130-pound animal was bought from Walter Fredling (right) of Norquay.

TOURIST BROCHURE Feb. 16

A tourist brochure had been published by the Canora Chamber of Commerce, welcoming visitors to Canora and the surrounding area. Discussing the brochure, its distribution, and tourism, from left, were: George Leson, chamber tourism chairman; Adolf Matsalla, tourism and renewable resources minister, and Dr. Michael Rostotski, chamber president.

January 19, 1977 – In a mishap caused by icy streets, a 1973 car driven by Terry Brososky, 19, of Canora was in collision with a 1966 car driven by Vincent Pawlik, 19, of Canora at the intersection of Eighth Avenue East and Main Street in Canora.

February 5, 1977 – Residents of Main Street and Gavin Crescent in Canora were without power and water services for varying periods of time, the result of a break in a waterline on Main Street СÀ¶ÊÓƵ which caused flooding of an underground transformer of the Saskatchewan Power Corporation.

February 9, 1977 – Five years after joining the СÀ¶ÊÓƵeastern Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Canora Sterlings clinched their first regular season league title, beating the visiting Pipestone Beavers 10 to 5, led by Calvin Statchuk and Stan Gulutzan, who each potted hat tricks.

February 23, 1977 – Marvin Romanow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Romanow of Canora, was presented with a $900 International Nickel Company of Canada academic scholarship at the University of Saskatchewan’s college of engineering’s annual scholarship and awards banquet, winning the scholarship for the second time. He was enrolled in his fourth year of studies in electrical engineering.

March 2, 1977 – The Canora RCMP detachment was advising that motor vehicle operators obtain either a screen device or a lock to stop theft of gasoline by siphoning. One area youth had already been apprehended as a result of a complaint with regard to siphoning, a detachment representative said.

March 16, 1977 – Audrey Ortynsky of Canora received the Kamsack and District Lions Club award for her vocal solo and the Order of Eastern Star, Kamsack award in the bassoon class at the final concert of the Parkland Music Festival Association in Kamsack.
