Genevieve Galay from Stenen and Patricia Kachman from Hyas joined over 200 cyclists who rode from Dauphin to Clear Lake, Man. and back again in support of multiple sclerosis during the weekend of September 12-13.
The pair, known as The Parkland Pair, took part in The Riding Mountain Bike Challenge which was a very challenging ride covering 70kms each way. Strong winds on both days made cycling even more difficult.
This was the 19th year of the ride and the goal was to raise $186,000, all of which will remain in the province of Manitoba for research and client support. Together, Galay and Kachman raised $3,040 and have hopes of increasing that amount by the time pledges close at the end of the month.
Community support and generosity were evident everywhere, they said.
The ride was well organized and the camaraderie among volunteers and cyclists was great, the pair reported. Cyclists were treated to wonderful meals, food and beverages at scheduled stops along the way, assistance with bikes, first aid and overall encouragement.
The pair noted it was especially moving to meet riders who have MS. They wore shirts reading, 鈥淚 have MS... That鈥檚 why I ride!鈥
For Galay and Kachman the ride was a great experience and much more demanding than they had anticipated! They encourage others to consider riding next year. Persons may contact MS Manitoba for more information.
