Sturgis youth poster goes on to provincials

The Norquay Royal Canadian Legion Sturgis branch presented four students at the Sturgis Composite School with certificates and cash prize for their winning entries at the zone level of the Remembrance Day Poster Literacy categories for 2019.

The Norquay Royal Canadian Legion Sturgis branch presented four students at the Sturgis Composite School with certificates and cash prize for their winning entries at the zone level of the Remembrance Day Poster Literacy categories for 2019.

"Sturgis Composite School students winners go to Norquay where they are judged against Norquay and Pelly School entries. The winners then go on to the zone level. This year there were four students who won awards at the zone level," said Betty Lou Skogen, Legion member.

At zone level, Rayanne Westermann placed second in the Grade 12 essay category. Jailyn Soltys placed second in the Grades 7, 8 and 9 poem category. Brie Babiarz placed third in the Grades 4, 5 and 6 color poster category.

Andreanna Jatico won first place in the Grades 1, 2 and 3 black and white poster category. Jatico's black and white poster went on to the district level where she also won first place. The poster moved on the provincial level where she placed second. The poster has now been sent to the national level to be judged.

"This is the first time a student from Sturgis Composite School has had their work advance as far as the provincial level," stated Skogen. "It is encouraging to see how much work has gone into producing posters, poems and essays that have this quality of excellence. Students from primary to Grade 12 are eligible. Zone level cash awards were given in memory of veteran Kenneth Fraser and presented by Betty-Lou Skogen, his daughter.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, certificates and cash awards were hand delivered to each student by Skogen who is an associate member of the Norquay Legion. Other cash prizes were given by the various levels of the Legion for first and second place.
