Sparty’s is “Open for business”

A thrift store which has been in operation for over 40 years, the last 15 at its Main Street location, has formed a partnership with Kamsack Comprehensive Institute (KCI.)

The Kamsack Thrift Store was originally established out of a community need and the desire of the Anglican Church congregation to meet that need. Since inception, it has been operated entirely by the Anglican Church Women (ACW) volunteers and donations from the public.

“Now is a good time to involve members of the younger generation,” said a release. “The ACW has partnered with KCI, and students in the Career Work Experience Programs will be working in the store.”

As part of the transformation, a contest was recently held to rename the outlet, and the name Sparty’s Thrift Store, proposed by two KCI students, Gerri Basaraba and Boston Guillet, was chosen as the winning entry. The pair will receive a bundle of books as a prize.

“The benefits of having students involved in running this operation are numerous,” the release said. “The skills utilized in working at the store will translate directly to the curriculum for Career Work Experience, Entrepreneurship, and Life Skills (at the regular, modified and alternate levels.)

“It will also provide a great partnership opportunity for the Transitioning Youth to Employment Program. Every student needs to learn the core value of civic responsibility and community engagement. Sparty’s will give students the firsthand experience they need.”

The Thrift Store also supports the local Victims Services Organization, upon request, and provides free clothing and household items for victims of fire, crime and relocation, the release said.

“KCI is very excited to take on this opportunity to continue service and connection to the surrounding community. If you have donations you can drop them off at KCI or call to have a pick up.”

Donations may be made at the store during store hours or by contacting any ACW member.

The new partnership has plans to operate the store every Friday, the release concluded.
