A new program is СƵ offered to reduce the effects of social isolation for older adults in Saskatchewan during the pandemic.

Senior Centre Without Walls (SCWW) is a free over the telephone program that offers learning, social connections, and fun interactive activities for adults that are affected by social isolation, stated a release. The program is done over the telephone from the home of the participant, with no computer or Internet needed.

• All that is needed: a telephone to join in group phone calls.

• How it works: Phone in and register for the program and receive a newsletter and a monthly list of classes.

• Topics range from: health and wellness, fun trivia games, social chats, author readings, and many quest speakers on a variety of topics.

• Each telephone session: has about 10 people and lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.

SCWW is a new program in Saskatchewan with a central hub in Moose Jaw, continued the release. Initiated by the Non-Profit Organization, “Age Friendly Outreach and Resource Network,” Ronda Wedhorn, the Program Outreach manager, patterned this program after similar successful SCWW programs in other provinces and the United States.

This social engagement telephone program is aimed to reduce the feeling of loneliness and social isolation for older adults and other adults with physical disabilities that find it hard to get out into the community or are isolated from the effects of COVID-19. SCWW reaches out to older adults, people living with disabilities, low income citizens, and to rural and remote communities across Saskatchewan.

For more information about SCWW is available from: Ronda Wedhorn at 306 690-4957 or email [email protected].

Funded provided in part by Canadian Red Cross (Employment and Social Development Government of Canada).
