The Second Annual Sandy Beach Disc Golf Tournament was held on July 30 with a great turnout of athletes of all ages.
“If we had put in an order for the weather it couldn’t have been better,” said Kelly Butz, the Sandy Beach resort operator. “We’ve been very fortunate last year, and again this summer.”
Butz believes the weather was what brought in 36 disc golfers to participate in two rounds of disc golf for the tournament.
“It was great to see the good turnout. We had been shooting for 40 participants, so next year we’ll hit it,” said Butz.
The field of golfers included 12 women and 24 men.
“You often read online that it’s a challenge to get women involved in tournaments, so we’re very happy that a full one-third of the field was full of female players,” said Butz.
Other participants included Dale Wall of Saskatoon, who participated in his first disc golf tournament at the age of 70, and Owen Istace of Weyburn, who was the youngest golfer at 10 years old.
“That just shows that disc golf is pretty well accessible for all ages,” said Butz. “It’s one of the reasons we installed a course, since it is an all-age activity.”
Debbie Hupka-Butz of Earl Grey won the prize for СƵ closest to the pin on hole No. 1, while Sarah Gottselig of Regina had the longest drive which was marked out on hole No. 8.
In the mens’ tournament, Mark Kienle of Wadena earned the prize for closest to the pin on No. 1, while Jeremy Taylor of Saskatoon had the longest drive which was marked out on No. 8.
Butz wanted to thank the resort’s Cabin Owners Association for helping make the event a success. The volunteers from the club collected prizes, prepared the course, and served hamburgers to the golfers.
Butz said he hopes to get in a few rounds of disc golf himself after they finish cleaning up after the event. The next tournament will be held in July of 2017.
