聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Student Representative council (SRC) and the staff have been organizing numerous activities to boost the school spirit at Canora Composite School, said Curtis Baillie, vice-principal.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 School spirit days are always a lot of fun and most students from Grade 5 to Grade 12 participate in most activities, he said. The first spirit day was on April 18 when it was Sports Day. Students came dressed as athletes or wore the jerseys of their favourite teams.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭here were a lot of Riders and Blue Jay colours that day,鈥 said Baillie.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 A couple of days later, it was Light and Bright Day during which students wore a whole array of neon-coloured clothing.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 On April 26, it was Wacky Hair Day which demanded that a lot of pictures be taken throughout the day.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 On April 28, it was one of the teachers鈥 favourite spirit days which was called Snazzy Thursday, said Baillie. Students dressed in their formal wear, which made the teacher proud. There were a lot of ties and suits and the girls were dressed in their finest dresses.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Some of the spirit days still to come have names like Cupcake Day which will involve eating a lot of decorated cupcakes and then there will be Gym Blast which is run by a Regina company. The students will be divided into four teams and will then participate in a wide range of games in the gym.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚t鈥檚 a high energy event and the kids love it,鈥 said Baillie.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Some of the big activities coming up is a school dance in June and there will be Inflatable Adventure Day when which the students will participate in various games on inflatable platforms.
CCS activities
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Senior badminton recently finished. Four students, Felicity Mydonick, Bryce Pelechaty, Mina Mykytyshyn and Dale Weinbender, made it to the district competitions but no one made it to the medals.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Junior badminton is scheduled to finish this week, said Baillie.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Peewee football began last week and track-and-field practices will be beginning soon, he said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The CCS Dram Club program has wound down after the crew attended the regional festival in Regina on April 22, Baillie said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The group put on the play Comic Book Artists. Betty Tomilin and Lisa St. Mars were the directors (instrutors).
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Graeme Wilgosh won a spirit of drama award and Scott Popoff won a best technical award. The whole group won the most-spirited school award and an award for set design (backdrops).
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Starting this month, students will have the opportunity to join a wrestling program run by Koren Pitkethly, the Grade 5 teacher. While in university, she won two national silver medals for wrestling.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The program is new to the school and this year the students will learn the basics, but if there is enough interest, a wrestling club will be organized for the next school year, said Baillie.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The peewee golf program will be starting shortly. It is the second year for the program which is taught by Dustin Nielsen and Curtis Baillie. Participants meet at noon hour for instruction at CCS and once the basics are covered, the group will go to the golf course for an afternoon to learn golfing etiquette and to play a few holes.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Last year was the first time the golf program was introduced and about 15 students participated, Baillie said. More students are expected this year.
