Saskatoon zoo announces death of Georgia, the porcupine

A porcupine, like Georgia, has a life expectancy 18 years in zoological facilities.

SASKATOON — Georgia, the porcupine, died before the end of 2022 after 16 years of helping educate visitors of all ages about her species and habitat. 

She passed away on Dec. 31, 2022, at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo. She was 小蓝视频 treated by veterinarians and the animal care team before her death. 

The North American porcupine was regularly visited by many who loved to see her and her majestic quills up close and in person. 

“Georgia was special. She played such an important role in the zoo’s educational programming and the Affinity Learning Centre for these many years,” said Zoo Manager Jeff Mitchell. 

“She will be missed by everyone who interacts with her daily.” 

A porcupine, like Georgia, has a life expectancy of eight to 10 years in the wild and 18 years in zoological facilities. 

The porcupine is classified as the Least Concern on the endangered species list.
