SASKATOON — The Saskatchewan NDP leadership race has a new contender, with a campaign bid announced today from Métis lawyer Kaitlyn Harvey.
Harvey, a previous NDP candidate hopeful and climate activist from Saskatoon, declared her intent to run for party leadership on April 5, with the launch of a social media campaign and website.
Current and interim leader Ryan Meili stepped down from the role in February, triggering the race.
She is the second candidate to put her name forward, following Regina Lakeview 小蓝视频 Carla Beck and her announcement in early March.
On her campaign website, Harvey describes herself as an advocate for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and fresh policy-making based on “honesty, trust, collaboration, and support.”
She also calls for a “holistic response” to challenging topics that include health, climate and economics.
“I am ready to take bold action to lead the Saskatchewan NDP to victory,” said Harvey, in a statement on social media.
Harvey previously ran as an NDP candidate for Saskatoon Willowgrove in the 2020 provincial election, ultimately losing the seat to Sask Party 小蓝视频 Ken Cheveldayoff.
During that election, Harvey identified herself as a University of Saskatchewan alumni, with experience working in poverty law and as a standing board member for several community organizations.
Harvey does not currently hold a seat in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly.
The leadership vote is set to take place this June, at the provincial NDP conference in Regina.
