In the notification email sent to members of the Kamsack Business Association, a letter was included requesting support of the Kamsack Recreation Board鈥檚 disc golf project.
鈥淎s you may have already heard, Kamsack can now add a disc golf course to the list of recreation facilities available in town,鈥 the letter says. 鈥淒isc golf is an inexpensive, family friendly activity that has exploded in popularity in the last ten years.鈥
In the summer of 2017 Kamsack public works staff installed a very basic disc golf course at the sportsgrounds in order to gauge local interest, it said. In response to the community's interest the course will be permanently upgraded under the guidance of an expert course designer for the summer of 2018.
As a part of this upgrade permanent galvanized (non-rusting) baskets will be installed at each of the nine hole as well as adding more tee markers and signage, it said. 鈥淎s recommended by our course designer, the baskets will be the same as those used at the course in Yorkton which have been in place for more than five years and still look brand new.
鈥淔or a $500 donation, your business can sponsor one of the nine holes. Your business name and logo will be prominently displayed at the tee markers as well as on the hole basket.聽 Additionally, your business will receive a tax receipt from the Town of Kamsack for your donation.鈥
To generate awareness and interest of disc golf in Kamsack, the Recreation Board is planning to hold a series of Learn to Play Disc Golf during the season, and the Parkland Disc Golf Association is planning a tournament to be held at the Kamsack course for the 2018 series.
鈥淲e anticipate there to be quite a lot of traffic through our course this summer.鈥
To arrange a donation, or for more information on sponsorship opportunities for the disc golf course, people are asked to contact Jared Ruf at (306)542-9155 or [email protected].
The game of disc golf plays much like ball golf, said information accompanying Ruf鈥檚 letter. There are marked tees, players throw within eight-feet of the right of the tee post, usually throwing a driver disc. As might be expected, drivers, which can be thrown forehand or backhand, are designed to fly farther than other discs. A midrange disc is thrown from the fairway. One simply throws again from behind the position where the driver landed. Once close to the basket, choose a putter and throw it so it hits the target and one has completed the 鈥榟ole.鈥
A round of disc golf is both fun and great exercise. A round of 18 will mean a walk of approximately one kilometre.
鈥淵ou will do an aerobic-like twist of your body some 55-times in throwing discs, and you will bend over as in touching your toes, some 100 times in picking up discs, and your disc bag. The game is inexpensive and accessible to all ages and athletic abilities.鈥
The sport of disc golf is growing in popularity, locally there are now 20 courses in the Parkland Region and the Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG) began promoting tournaments, events and year-end awards in 2016. The PADG is already developing the 2018 series, and is anticipating at least 15 events leading up to the Farrell Agencies Champions鈥 Challenge in October. The champions of the 2017 series ranged from The Pas, Man., to Saskatoon, Regina, Percival, Moosomin, Wadena, Kuroki, Melville and Yorkton.
