RCMP activity report for August and September

Canora RCMP members are investigating a theft at the Canora Dari Bar that occurred on August 15 at around 8:30 p.m. Video footage of the incident caught an unknown female who approached the front counter window and stole a tip jar from inside the business. The tip jar held $200 in cash tips. Anyone with information about the person(s) responsible is asked to please call the Canora RCMP at 306-563-4700 or crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477

Tire slashing in Buchanan

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP are requesting the public's assistance in solving the following crime. Between the late hours of August 11 and the early morning of August 12, six vehicles had their tires punctured in the 3rd Avenue East and 1st Avenue East area of Buchanan. Appeal dismissed

In August of 2013, Canora RCMP responded to a single vehicle rollover. The vehicle driver, Mitch Nahnybida and one passenger were taken to the local hospital and another passenger was airlifted to Regina and later succumbed to his injuries. Nahnybida was charged with impaired driving causing death, driving while disqualified, refusal to provide a sample, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and breach of probation.

On July 22, 2016, Nahnybida was sentenced to 40 months imprisonment and a five-year driving prohibition for dangerous driving causing death, 40 months imprisonment (concurrent) and a five-year driving prohibition for refusal to provide a sample, 6 months imprisonment (consecutive) for driving while disqualified and 6 months imprisonment (concurrent) for breach of probation and a firearm prohibition on the above charges. Nahnybida was found not guilty by a jury for the impaired driving causing death. Nahnybida filed for appeal on August 19, 2016 and on August 30, 2018 the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and upheld the conviction and the sentence.

Warrant

Canora RCMP members are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Breck Mathies (pictured) who is on warrant status. Damages to sign

Canora RCMP members are investigating damages that occurred to the Canora Storage Company sign located next to the Subway. The incident occurred on August 8 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. An unknown vehicle struck the sign in the parking lot, causing extensive damages. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to please contact the Canora RCMP Detachment at 306-563-4700.

Stolen property – is it yours?

Canora RCMP currently has seized items that might have been stolen from the surrounding areas of Canora, Sturgis and Preeceville. There are multiple tires/rims, gasoline tanks, fuel tanks, Mastercraft tool kit, hoist, air conditioners, a truck window guard, farm equipment, a pressure washer and many other valuables. Suspicious fires

On July 31 Canora RCMP members were called to fires at several out buildings on property in the RM of Sliding Hills, just east of Gorlitz.  The fires occurred either July 30 or 31. Multiple buildings were burned down and the fires were deemed suspicious. Break-in at RM of Good Lake workshop

Over the September long weekend, the RM of Good Lake machine shop, which is located on Kozair Street in Canora, was broken into. Entry was gained by smashing in a door and various items were taken from tools to cans of oil and lubricants. Canora RCMP are still investigating the break and enter. If it’s unlatched it will be snatched

The Canora RCMP detachment ran a campaign on September 21 and 22 called, "If it's unlatched it will be snatched." The RCMP checked parked unattended vehicles to see whether or not the vehicles were properly secured. Property theft is continuing to be an ongoing issue in this area and the RCMP are trying to raise awareness and educate the public by making sure all of the public's personal belongings are locked up and out of sight inside their vehicles.
