Football teaches more than skills and fundamentals, it builds a brotherhood for life.

There were 15 plus young peewee football players who attended the first day of the football spring camp held in Preeceville on April 15.

PREECEVILLE - The Peewee football spring camp started back up in Preeceville this week with 15 plus players from Grades 5 and 6 from Preeceville, Sturgis, Norquay and Invermay coming together all with the same goal, to learn, have fun and get active.

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays on the Preeceville School football field and the first practice was April 15. Coaches Michael Bierman and James Dodge are spearheading the program.

“It has been numerous years since we have seen a peewee program,” said Bierman. “It is all about getting kids excited about football, learning the fundamentals at the same time as having fun and getting off the couch. It is not all about getting out on the field and hurting your opponent. It is focused on building players, creating a team atmosphere and building that brotherhood that will last a lifetime. It is great to see so much interest in the sport. As a young person growing up I was involved in lots of sports and want to instill that on my own son and children his age. The only thing that they really require in their own mouthguard for personal hygiene reasons. We have all the other gear they require. Please do not let buying a mouth guard stop your child from wanting to play. It is a low-cost minimum involvement with great rewards” he said.

The team is very new and may for now just play internal games but it may branch out and play the odd game against others who have a similar program just for some experience. In a few years, Bierman is hoping to establish a junior program, once the players in peewee move up and get comfortable with the sport.
