Norquay Recreation Board reviews activities during March meeting

Recreation activities were reviewed by members of the Norquay Recreation Board during their regular meeting on March 13.

Discussing the Communiplex Management Board (CMB), Ruth Demetrick said that the group has installed one new toilet and an update needs to be purchased for the AED (automated external defibrillator).

Vaughan Demetrick said that 19 teams were already registered for the men鈥檚 bonspiel that was held prior to the banquet on March 18.

Laura Dahl said that the walking club鈥檚 faithful walkers have not let the cold, blizzard-like conditions deter them from turning out every Monday and Wednesday at the Communiplex.

Regarding Norquay School, Stacey Rubletz said that parent/teacher interviews were to be held April 11 and 12 and will include a scholastic book fair. She said a perogy Supper was to be held March 29; the drama festival, April 6 and 7, and the junior drama presentation on April 6. A band festival was held on March 29 and the school鈥檚 Spirit Week, March 27 to 31.

Melissa Czornobay reported that registration for soccer will be starting soon.

Iris Nokinsky said that the NICE Centre had a stew supper on March 17. She said the Centre has hired a new caretaker and things are progressing as usual.

Stacey Rubletz said that the Ukrainian Dancers鈥 spring concert was to be held April 9 and the dancers will be travelling to Dauphin, Man., on April 27 and 28 for competitions, and to Yorkton the first weekend in May.

Laura Dahl discussed the Legion zone rally that was held in Norquay on March 26 when 13 Legion branches were expected to be represented. A Vimy Ridge centennial catered supper was to be held April 9. She said that the branch hopes that an elementary or high school student will be able to give a presentation on Vimy Ridge. Everyone was urged to attend the service. Regular meetings of the branch are held the second Thursday of each month with a social potluck on the last Friday of each month.

Ruth Demetrick said that on March 12, a total of 26 members of the Tail Twisters 4-H Club gave 鈥渧ery interesting speeches鈥 at a public speaking event and 11 members gave their speeches at the Norquay Health Centre.

Regarding the Playschool, Bowdrie Northrop reported that the school has started a new fundraiser selling Mabels鈥 Labels.

Melissa Czornobay said that the figure skating carnival had a good turnout and members are to help with a family dance on April 22.

Bowdrie Northrop said that the Norquay Nighthawks women鈥檚 hockey team was to attend a tournament in Estevan April 7 to 9.

Iris Nokinsky reported that the Active Aging Group membership keeps climbing.

A fundraiser letter from Joelle Smart, who owns Joey Children鈥檚 Apparel in Yorkton, was distributed.聽 The letter says that Smart has decided to focus from retail to more community-minded events and listed several potential events she would be prepared to spearhead, including an Easter egg hunt, a women鈥檚 ceramic paint night, events for Mother鈥檚 Day and Father鈥檚 Day, a summer program and a back-to-school event.
