Members of the Norquay Active Aging exercise group were involved in making a video for the Sunrise Health Region on August 31.
Ten participants worked with two peer leaders and five members from Yorkton who organized and filmed members of the group as they performed their exercise for one hour, said Delphine Howard of Norquay, a member of the exercise group.
鈥淲e than had lunch served by the exercise group and following lunch the participants were interviewed and asked questions as to why they had joined the group, why they liked it and how the exercise had helped them,鈥 Howard said. The peer leaders were asked why they got involved and were asked if they were happy with the program and the training.
鈥淭he Active Aging exercise program is a program in which we have free training provided by Sunrise Health Region and Parkland Valley Sports, Recreation and Culture, with exercise therapists teaching the course,鈥 Howard said. 鈥淭he program is based on balance, strength and flexibility.
After peer leaders are trained they must find a place to offer the program which is the host site, she said. 鈥淚n Norquay our course is offered at the N.I.C.E Centre with the program running from October to April.
The program was started four years ago and the Norquay group has been going all four years with a refresher course every fall, she said. The Active Aging exercise program is a great opportunity to get seniors involved and moving in a safe way and a way to do it together so it becomes a social activity.
This program is led by peer leaders who volunteer their time to run the program, Howard said. There is no charge to get involved in this program.
The video will be viewable on the Sunrise Health Region website starting the last week of September.
