In a byelection held to fill the vacant position of mayor in the Village of Pelly, a man who was serving as a councillor for the village won with more than double the votes of his only opposition.
Trevor Auchstaetter was elected as the new mayor, receiving 68 votes out of a possible 102, according to Frances Olson, Village administrator. Steve Lenaghan, also a councillor, received 30 votes. He will remain on council.
Sharon Nelson who was re-elected for a four-year term in 2016, and had served as the Mayor of Pelly for the past 12 years, and on council prior to that, resigned the position for personal reasons, leaving the seat vacant and forcing the byelection.
鈥淭he positions are four-year terms, so the next general election will be held in 2020,鈥 said Olson. 鈥淲e will be putting out a call for nominations to fill Trevor鈥檚 vacant council seat in the near future, but as yet, that date has not been determined.鈥
The Village of Pelly, located north of Kamsack, has a population of 285 according to the 2016 census.
