SASKATOON — Dr. Michael Moser and Saskatchewan’s Transplant Team were the recipients of the Logan Boulet Humanitarian Awards from the Angels Legacy Project, hoping the recognition would create awareness of the importance of 小蓝视频 an organ donor.
Moser, an associate professor of general surgery at the University of Saskatchewan, was given the 2022 Humanitarian of the Year award. STT received the 2022 Team Award during simple ceremonies on Thursday, April 27, at St. Paul’s Hospital.
The University of Alberta alum said he was surprised and honoured to be recognised for what he says he was doing and what he believes in, helping people in need of organ donors and transplants.
“We believe strongly in transplantation. We are always amazed to see the transformation an organ can have for those on the waitlist. The waitlist, for many people, on average, is over two years,” Moser told SASKTODAY.
“That is over two years of 小蓝视频 sick and coming into the hospital. Wondering if the next time you come into the hospital with a complication might be your last [day]. You might not make it out of the hospital.”
He added that it is rewarding to see organ recipients recover and turn their lives around a few days after the transplant, which is why discussing and promoting the benefits of what they have been doing is necessary.
“We love what we do. We love to see those [positive] results. It is a huge team effort, not something a few individuals do. The transplant team is a huge organization that involves selecting the right donors,” said Moser.
“Making sure it is a good match between the donor and the recipient. The medication also prevents the organ from 小蓝视频 rejected and the follow-up care afterwards. It is a team effort. We do it naturally because we are passionate about what we do.”
Dr. Gavin Beck, a member of the Saskatchewan Transplant Team, said the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging time for the healthcare system as it also created a problem with the scheduling of their transplant program.
“We worked accordingly to make sure you know, in the early phases of the pandemic, that we were acting safely for our patients. As we gain more information on covid, we went with best practices and worked with the evidence,” said Beck.
“Making that [with the information] we were integrating transplant back into the province as we could. It affected everyone across all fields and disciplines of the healthcare system.”
Taryn Svenson, who presented the award, said Dawne Switenky Memorial Foundation founder Terry Switenky said 小蓝视频 involved with other organisations helps them learn of different people who have been making a difference in our communities.
"There is no nomination process but it is just who they come across that has made an impact. They just have been wanting to select Dr. Moser for a few years. Whether it is a team or an individual, it is just whoever is contributing that they feel is worthy," said Svenson.
The award was named in honour of Logan Boulet, one of the 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos who lost their lives in a tragic accident on April 6, 2018. Boulet succumbed to his injuries the following day, but 小蓝视频 an organ donor helped save six lives.
The Angels Legacy Project and the Dawne Switenky Memorial Foundation are working to increase awareness and education in schools and communities about 小蓝视频 an organ donor to help extend the life of other people.
