聽A family-run seed grower has captured multiple awards at the Yorkton 2018 Harvest Showdown.
Rod, Cathy and Mike Fedoruk of Fedoruk Seeds of Kamsack captured awards for Pedigreed Barley, Pedigreed HRSW (Hard Red Spring Wheat), Pedigreed Peas and the Premier Seed Award for accumulating the most points as the grand aggregate winner.
鈥淭he Yorkton show is the only seed show of its kind left in Saskatchewan,鈥 said Mike Fedoruk.
鈥淔edoruk Seeds has been in operation for over 20 years and during that time there have been a lot of changes in the seed industry. We are a seed retailer for Kamsack and area, and we retail the seed we grow,鈥 he said.
鈥淲e sell barley, oats, peas and soybeans. We grow, process and store it. During the winter months we sell it, and the seed is picked up in the spring. Spring is our busiest time,鈥 he said.
The seed farm employs eight people on a full-time and seasonal basis. Although Fedoruk has always been involved with the farm he took some time to attend the University of Saskatchewan and received a degree in Agriculture in 2013.
Fedoruk works in sales and marketing for Fedoruk Seeds. Geographically, most of the seed sales go to east central Saskatchewan and into Manitoba, but some go to Alberta, B.C. and even Quebec, he said.
For the Harvest Showdown, the seed entries have to be taken in a week prior to the show, and the judging criteria includes appearance, germination and presence of disease.
鈥淚t is a real honour to have received awards for our seed in multiple categories, including the Premier Seed Award,鈥 Fedoruk said.
