Largest pumpkin topped scale at 145 pounds

A 145-pound pumpkin entered by Tom Babchishin of Preeceville topped the scales for top spot at the annual Town of Preeceville pumpkin contest held at the Preeceville Centennial Park on September 12.

The Preeceville Library hosted a barbecue lunch along with the contest.

The second place entry weighed 72 pounds and was entered by Mary Pasiechnik. Third place went to Toni Chornomitz with a pumpkin that weighed 36.5 pounds.

The contest was also open for potatoes, cabbage, zucchini, onions, carrots, turnips and beets categories. The kids鈥 category encouraged children to enter a creative display of animal or creature using vegetables. There were five children, Wyatt and Carter Scheller, Myrandah and Jainylle Gagnon and Bryanna Hartl who entered, with each child receiving 10 Preeceville bucks. The pumpkin winner won 75 Preeceville bucks and second prize winner won 50 Preeceville bucks. Each other category winners won 50 and 25 for second in Preeceville bucks. Each entry must have been grown in the gardener鈥檚 own garden.

In the potato category, Tracy Karcha won 铿 rst place for her entry that weighed 2. 11.90 pounds. Second place went to Susan Serhan for her entry that weighed 2.11.35 pounds. Other entries included: Toni Chornomitz, 2.06.6 pounds; Dianne Kudeba, 2.05.55 pounds; Esther Prystay, 2.03.50 pounds; Eugenia Kennedy,1.14.85 pounds; Zoria Sawka, 2.08.35 pounds; Mary Pasiechnik, 2.03.80 pounds; Elsie Luciw, 2.09,15 pounds; and Joyce Hydamaka, 2.00.50 pounds.

In the zucchini category, Nellie Long won 铿乺st place with her entry, 12.5 pounds. Second place went to Mary Pasiechnik for her entry 11.5 pounds. Other entries included: Tonie Chornomitz, 11 pounds; Carter and Wyatt Scheller,10.02.20 pounds; Jennie Emond, 9.01.35 pounds; Nellie Dergousoff, 9.04.20 pounds; Jaxon Neilson, 7.07.65 pounds; and Susan Serhan, 9.04.70 pounds.

In the beet category, Dianne Kudeba won first place for her entry that weighed 5.03.65 pounds. Second place went to Stella Kardynal and it weighed 2.12.05 pounds. The other entry was brought in by Eugenia Kennedy that weighed 1.14.70 pounds.

In the onion category, Harvey Wolowski won 铿 rst place for his entry that weighed 1.08 pounds. Second place went to Nellie Dergousoff for her entry that weighed 1.07. 55 pounds. Other entries were by: Susan Serhan, 1.04.60 pounds; and Eugenia Kennedy, 4.80.03 ounces.

In the turnip category, Eugenia Kennedy won 铿 rst place for her entry, 8.00.15 pounds. Second place went to Stella Kardynal, 4.14.25 pounds. Other entries were: Carter and Wyatt Scheller, 4.04.20 pounds; and Susan Serhan, 4.00.25 pounds.

In the cabbage category, there were only two entries. Susan Serhan won 铿乺st place with her entry, 17 pounds, and Maureen Johnson, won second for her entry, 8.09.10 pounds.

In the carrot category, Mary Pasiechnik won first, 1.00.45 pounds. Second place went to Susan Serhan, 1.00.10 pounds, and the other entry was entered by Stella Kardynal, 14.05 ounces.
