Five teachers who are new or returning to the full-time staff of the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute were welcomed by students and staff of the school when classes opened for the 2020-21 term earlier this month.
Laura Blender was raised in Yorkton and now lives in Ebenezer with her husband and two children. She attended First Nation University (FNU) and University of Regina (U of R), studying education and now works at the KCI and Canora Junior Elementary school.
Blender is teaching art to grades 5 to 9 students and physical education to some Grade 5 students. She previously taught in Norquay for two years.
Blender says she enjoys several outdoor activities, from wakeboarding to quading.
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Tyler Read attended University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a bachelor of education degree with a major in math and minor in chemistry and history. He previously taught in Dawson Creek, B.C. for two years and is now teaching chemistry 30, biology 30, physical science 20, health science 20, environmental science 20, science 10, and Grade 9 social studies. He enjoys playing soccer and curling.
Born and raised in Kamsack, the daughter of Claire Bishop who also teaches at KCI, Rebecca Lawless graduated from the school in 2007. She and her husband Shaun have three children, Rhys, Morgan, and Wilder.
After graduating from FNU with a bachelor of Indigenous studies with distinction, she attended the U of R where she earned a degree in social work.
In this her first year of teaching, Lawless is teaching grades 8 to 12 art, Grade 7 social studies and science, and Grade 9 music and dance.
She says she enjoys family time, camping and quading.
Laura Reilkoff has accepted a full position at KCI after having taken a term position at the school last year and then completed the year at Crystal Lake Hutterite Colony near Norquay.
Reilkoff moved here from Prince Albert last year with her husband Scott and three children, Tanner, Carter and Anna. She taught for 10 year in Prince Albert and has been hired to teach Grade 8 ELA (English Language Arts) and grades 10 and 12 English.
She enjoys golfing, spending time at the lake and family time.听
Cara Shabatoski, who is returning to the KCI after a two-year leave, will be teaching Grade 6. Shabatoski attended the University of Saskatchewan and has taught in Springside and Churchbridge prior to coming to Kamsack. She lives in Kamsack with her husband Deven and four children, Liam, Preston, Brynn, and Tess. In her free time, she says she enjoys gardening, golfing and going to the beach.
