Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department spreads birthday cheer during pandemic

Special days like birthdays continue to happen, even during a time of a worldwide virus outbreak.

Special days like birthdays continue to happen, even during a time of a worldwide virus outbreak.

The Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) has joined the ranks of many other fire departments across Canada and other parts of the world in an effort to spread cheer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lieut. Kristin Johnson has been dressing up as 鈥淪parky,鈥 the KVFD mascot, and along with Ken Thompson, fire chief, driving the fire engine, has gone on a number of trips to brighten the birthdays of area children who are celebrating birthdays during an unprecedented time of 鈥渟ocial distancing鈥 due to the novel coronavirus.

One of the trips made so far has been to deliver a special gift, along with flashing lights and sirens, to Weston Nahnybida who turned two on April 6.

All social distancing rules are observed by the firefighters, and the extra effort is well-worth it to see the joy on the youngsters鈥 faces, it was said.

鈥淭he Fire Department has purchased all the supplies for the gift bags, including gift cards from Kandy鈥檚 Korner, coloring books and supplies, bubble makers and candy,鈥 said Johnson. 鈥淭he gift exchange takes place in front of the youngster鈥檚 home, observing social distancing, and the children are not allowed to enter the fire truck.鈥

Another trip was made to Cote First Nation to brighten the day of Diora Dustyhorn who turned five on April 9.

KVFD is posting details of their trips on its social media Facebook page.

One may contact Johnson by call or text at 306-594-7280, or send a message on Facebook beforehand with the details and KVFD will arrange to come over on the big day with the lights and sirens on to deliver your child a special gift from the Kamsack Fire Department outside your door, said information on the Facebook page.

鈥淔rom all of us here at Kamsack Fire we wish you and your family good health,鈥 it said.
