听听听听听听听听听听听 With another 150 plates of ham and perogies served, the Veregin Hall rests a bit more firmly as the community鈥檚 social centre.
听听听听听听听听听听听 The third annual Save the Hall fundraiser, which was held January 13, was, like the previous two, a success, said Nadia Reibin, president of the Veregin New Horizons Inc.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淲e had people from all over attending,鈥 Reibin said, listing the communities of Veregin, Kamsack, Canora and Mikado as places from which supporters of the project came.
听听听听听听听听听听听 Reibin said that the committee had decided to reduce the number of seats in the hall in order to give everyone 鈥渁 bit more elbow room鈥 at the tables so fewer tickets to the meal were sold.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淲ith the money from the meal and from donations, we expect we will have made almost the same amount as we made in the other two years,鈥 she said.
听听听听听听听听听听听 At the hall, diners filled their plates with perogies, ham, meatballs in sauce, corn, coleslaw, tossed salad, buns and pickles, and then for dessert, people had their choice of wheat salad or a Hawaiian salad with tea, coffee or juices.
听听听听听听听听听听听 The event included a cash bar and the sale of 50/50 tickets. The winner of the draw received about $490. 听
听听听听听听听听听听听 Money from the fundraiser will be going towards the purchase of new chairs for the coffee shop, she said.
听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淎wesome volunteers cooked the food, Reibin said, mentioning the 鈥渓adies from Kamsack who came out to pinch perogies.鈥
鈥淚t was a good outing for them,鈥 she said. They made 80 dozen perogies for the supper.
The committee鈥檚 efforts have done much to improve the condition of the hall and adjoining coffee shop. A new furnace for the coffee shop and a commercial dishwasher had been previously purchased and among the improvements made in the past year are: new tables and chairs for the hall, a new commercial mixer for the kitchen, a new stand-up cooler and painting of the ceilings.
鈥淏ut there鈥檚 still lots to do,鈥 she said, mentioning the painting of the outside of the building, new flooring for the centre, having the hardwood floor in the hall redone, and replacing the hall鈥檚 furnace.
Reibin encourages everyone wishing to continue to support the hall to remember that the third annual shishliki supper will be served at the hall at the end of April.听 听
