Staff, students and guests gathered in the Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex gymnasium on April 12 to pay tribute to Humboldt and the Broncos hockey team.
On April 6 a highway accident claimed the life of 16 Humboldt Broncos team members and support staff. Many of the Cote students and staff wore green in honour of the Broncos team colour and others wore jerseys of their favourite hockey teams.
Resident elder Sadie Cote began the 小蓝视频 with an opening prayer.
鈥淲e are thankful for this day, and ask each and every one to remember those who lost their lives in the bus crash carrying the Humboldt Broncos,鈥� she said.
Drummers Joshua Badger and Elijah Cote then played a tribute number on a large kettle drum, while chanting.
A moment of silence was observed to honour the 16 people who lost their lives.
鈥淎 lot of us play hockey, and our teams travel on busses,鈥� said Jonas Cote, principal, to the gathered assembly. 鈥淲e are here today to show support to Humboldt families and the community for their loss. And we hope the driver of the truck may find comfort.鈥�
鈥淲e send condolences to the Broncos,鈥� said Ted Cote, CGCEC school board member. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 imagine how the parents of the players who lost their lives must feel; I get choked up just talking about it. This has been so shocking for any parent who has a child who goes on the road for any sport.鈥�
Alvin Cote spoke on behalf of the Cote First Nation council, saying Green Day was 小蓝视频 held to show respect and honour those who perished, and reflect on what happened.
鈥淭he world has heard about this tragedy,鈥� he said. 鈥淓veryone is part of the team in some way. I ask you to keep everyone in your prayers. Sometimes words fail.鈥�
鈥淭his is a tragedy for everyone who has ever played for a team,鈥� said Rob Kostiuk, the physical education teacher. 鈥淚t really hits home.鈥�
鈥淧lease remember the ones who lost their lives. Today we remember the Broncos. Keep them in your prayers,鈥� he said.
