A former Kamsack air cadet, named a top Saskatchewan cadet, attended a leaders’ summit in Ottawa where she also met the Prime Minister and the American President.

Warrant Officer Brooklynn Andrusiak was a Kamsack air cadet from 2011 to 2014. She is now a member of the Tisdale air cadet squadron and was selected to attend the North American Leaders Summit in Ottawa June 29 to July 2.

The daughter of Daryl and Chastity of Tisdale and granddaughter of Sandra and Eugene Andrusiak of Pelly, Brooklynn had been chosen as a top Saskatchewan cadet because of the awards she has received, her mother said. She had received the Lord Strathcona Medal, the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, the Anavets Cadet Medal of Merit and the Air Cadet Service Medal.

She was promoted to Warrant Officer this year and received the Commanding Officer’s Award for the second year in a row.

Andrusiak and 13 other cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers (JCRs) from across the country had the opportunity to attend the Summit on June 29 in Ottawa, her mother said. After a day of citizenship touring in Ottawa, the provincial and territorial youth representatives were invited to attend a series of events before greeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Barack Obama.

After shaking hands with the leaders, the cadets and JCRs were escorted into the House of Commons to attend the President’s address.

While in Ottawa, the cadets and JCRs took part in other citizenship and leadership activities including the Hadfield Youth Summit and the annual Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

That was an experience of a lifetime and a great honour to represent the cadets of Saskatchewan, her mother said.

Andrusiak is now spending seven weeks in Whitehorse, Yukon, as a staff cadet.
