聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 Ken Thompson, the deputy fire chief for the Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department, was the special guest at a fire prevention assembly at Victoria School on Friday.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The assembly included a presentation by six Grade 4 students who talked about fire safety, a rousing dance to music from the Ghostbusters movie, and a short film that stressed the importance of calling 9-1-1 in case of emergencies, such as a fire.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In his presentation, Thompson reminded the students to make sure they have two ways out of their house and that they have a predetermined place to meet outside the house to assure that everyone is safe.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 He cautioned students to never go back into a fire to retrieve something including a pet and reminded the students to 鈥渟top, drop and roll鈥 if their clothes should ever catch fire.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Thompson warned his audience to never play with matches or with fire and said that they should not be afraid of firefighters who arrive at the scene dressed in safety gear and likely wearing tanks of air which may allow them to enter a burning structure.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 He introduced Quin Summers, a Kindergarten student who was wearing a suit of firefighter鈥檚 gear made especially for a youngster by Jonathon Fesik of Calgary, a former firefighter who now cleans turnout gear for various fire departments.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In a brief question-and-answer session, Thompson talked about the importance of fire drills and stressed the importance of wearing brightly-coloured costumes or clothing on Halloween to make sure that they will be seen by passing motorists. He said it was very important for students to call 9-1-1 only when there is an emergency, and not at other times.
