An architecture and interior design company which was asked to provide a facility assessment of the Broda Sportsplex, recently presented its findings to Kamsack鈥檚 town council.
At the January 27 regular council meeting, representatives from the company, aodbt, based out of Saskatoon, presented their findings and provided a report complete with recommendations.
鈥淭he Broda Sportsplex continues to be a vital facility for keeping our residents active and entertained during the winter months,鈥 said Shanley Allard, recreation director. 鈥淭he building was originally constructed in 1977 and provides our community with the opportunity to play hockey and curl, and is a community space to the host events.
鈥淭o help ensure it remains open for years to come, a facility assessment was recently performed,鈥 she continued. 鈥淭he main objective of this assessment was to provide an outside, educated review of the structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems in addition to a life cycle assessment and cost replacement to provide clear information on the overall condition of the facility. The assessment will be used to receive recommendations for repairs and help develop a long-term plan for the Broda Sportsplex.
鈥淭he aodbt team, which visited Kamsack in October to begin assessment of the building, was chosen because they have worked on many other facility assessments in the area including Yorkton鈥檚 Kinsmen Arena, and we felt they brought a lot of knowledge and experience with them.鈥
The report will be used as a guideline, moving forward, to ensure the rink is maintained. A couple of the items highlighted as a concern were the roof, building envelope, site drainage, as well as the ice fields piping and plant, Allard said.
鈥淭he aodbt team was impressed with how well our facility has been maintained and the cleanliness given its age,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey also stated that based on the size of Kamsack, the rink offers all the programming, space and services we would need for the community. They applauded our efforts in making our facility accessible and also noted that we have one of the 鈥渃oolest鈥 floors that they have ever seen in a rink, located in our curling rink lounge.听
鈥淲e are excited for the future of the Broda Sportsplex and will move forward with a better long-term plan to ensure this important community facility stays open for many more years to come.
鈥淥ur community of Kamsack, specifically the Broda Sportsplex, has also been nominated for Kraft Hockeyville 2020. If you have any photos, fond memories or could provide a story on why our rink is important to you, make sure to visit krafthockeyville.ca before February 9 to show your support,鈥 Allard concluded.
