A woman clutching a fresh bachelor of arts degree with a major in English has been hired as the reporter-photographer for the Canora Courer.
Schayla Kirschman of Yorkton, who graduated from the University of Regina this spring, has begun meeting with Canora and district residents with the aim of generating stories and photographs for the weekly newspaper.
And to help do her job well, she has decided to move into the community by autumn.
A graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton, Kirschman, in addition to studying English for her arts degree, has also taken education classes.
鈥淚鈥檝e worked with the school newspapers in elementary and high school,鈥� she said last week, adding that among her interests throughout her school years have been theatre and music.
鈥淚鈥檝e been with the Free My Muse theatre company in Yorkton since grade school,鈥� she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e done lots with the company, from portraying Wendy in Peter Pan for my first production to playing a pregnant psychologist in Change of Heart for my latest production, and I鈥檓 still involved with the company.鈥�
Free My Muse stages children鈥檚 productions and individual presentations, offers advanced class performances and has an adult main stage, she said.
Kirschman also sings. She won a singing competition at Sacred Heart in Grade 12 and has often performed as a solo artist at the Fifth Avenue Cup and Saucer coffee shop in Yorkton.
Terming herself as 鈥渁 huge reader,鈥� Kirschman said she likes to read 鈥渁 bit of everything,鈥� but particularly enjoys fantasy, thrillers and mysteries.
鈥淓verybody in Canora seems so friendly,鈥� she said, commenting on how moving it was to have complete strangers say hello to her.
鈥淐anora is a beautiful little town,鈥� she said, explaining how, when contrasted with city life, it is so enjoyable to live and work in 鈥渢his little patch of business blessed with fresh air.
