SASKATOON — Dundurn Mayor Curtis Boyes has voiced his full support for the Dino Challenge event set on July 1, Saturday, organized by local entrepreneur and Big Mur’s Tavern owner Gary Grady.
The event aims to put the town on the world map by breaking the current Guinness World Record for the most people dressed up in inflatable dinosaur costumes, which is currently held by Portland, Oregon, with 380 participants last summer.
Boyes said that the Dundurn community fully supports the event and expects to draw visitors from across the region. The town is known for its vibrant spirit and is committed to promoting fun and family-friendly events during the Canada Day celebration.
The Dino Challenge aligns with this ethos, and the town recognizes the importance of promoting tourism and economic growth.
Boyes encouraged everyone joining the event to follow the guidelines Grady and his team set to ensure the event was fun and safe.
He said everyone’s cooperation could make this event successful and break the Guinness World Record.
The town's council is also supporting the event and ensuring all necessary permits and requirements are in place for the safety of Dundurn's citizens and visitors.
Grady said they are currently working out the logistics for the event, where participants will park at the Lions grounds and then shuttle to the parade by a 12-seater bus at the starting point in front of Big Mur's at 2nd Street.
The official dinosaur headcount and photographs will be taken around 5 p.m., with participants wearing dinosaur costumes receiving a beverage and burger.
As of March 27, 539 participants had registered to join the world record attempt. Guinness World Record representatives must verify the final headcount before Dundurn can officially break the record.
