A Kamsack woman who has found her “soul-mate workout” in a genre known as PiYo can be found teaching classes twice a week in the Victoria School gymnasium.
The internet describes PiYo as “a low impact workout that sculpts, strengthens and stretches. It is a low impact routine inspired by both Pilates and yoga, and will strengthen and stretch muscles you didn’t know you had.”
“This is my second year of teaching classes at the Victoria School,” said Maureen Humeniuk who has taken the necessary courses to become a certified PiYo instructor.
“Classes start in September and run until the end of the following May, dependent on the attendance,” she said.
The number of participants in each class varies between a low of two, to a high of eight and there is no minimum classes to sign up for, Humeniuk indicated.
“There is a drop-in fee of $6, and participants bring their own yoga mats and towels. It is a good idea to bring a water bottle as well.”
In addition to teaching twice a week, Humeniuk also has to practice at least twice a week to keep up with her level of fitness.
“Doing the workouts every week keeps me accountable and it provides the residents of Kamsack with an additional option to come to class and develop their core strength.
“This year, after earning enough money to pay off my certification fees, I wanted to donate back to our community. One of my participants suggested the senior drama club at the high school. She explained they really needed some extra funds to partake at the Regional Saskatchewan Drama festival which is in Esterhazy and then the Provincials, which are in Regina.”
Having found out that the senior drama club was in need of funds for props, costumes, set, travel and accommodations expenses, Humeniuk made the decision to commit all proceeds from her Tuesday evening class towards this particular club, beginning after the break in February.
“Next year I plan to do the same thing,” she said, “so if there is another local organization that needs some extra funds please contact me.
“To sum up the class I would have to say this: it is like a music driven, low impact but high intensity workout that is inspired by yoga/Pilates movements with a cardio twist to inspirational and upbeat music. Hope to see more people on the mat.”
