The Canora Composite School鈥檚 senior girls Cougar basketball team placed third in its own tournament held on January 29 and 30.
In their first game, the Canora girls played a Humboldt team and came away with a 41-14 win.
In their second game, the Cougars played a very strong St. Briuex team.
The Cougars had the lead heading into half time, but were unable to hold onto to it through out the second half, said Curtis Baillie, a coach.聽The Cougars ended up falling to the St. Briuex Crusaders by 14.
In the third-place game Canora played Moosomin. The game was very close throughout the entire contest with multiple lead changes. In the end the Cougars hit a clutch three pointer to put them over the edge and held on for a six-point win. The victory gave them third place.
In the first-place game, the team from Birch Hills beat St. Briuex in the final by 12 points.
So far this season, the Cougars competed in a tournament in St. Briuex where they finished in fourth place, losing to St. Brieux.
At the team鈥檚 second tournament of the season, played in Moosomin, the Cougars played three games, winning two and losing to the A-side championship to Kamsack.
鈥淭he girls played extremely hard defence in their final game and came away with a second-place finish in the tournament,鈥 Baillie said.
Last week, the girls were to have played a tournament in Langenburg, and after the February break the Cougars will be participating in a tournament in Norquay to prepare for SHSAA (Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association) Conference playdowns on March 4 and 5.
