The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 34 calls during the week of January 28 to February 4, some of which included: two traffic accidents, 11 traffic offences, 10 other provincial statutes, two thefts under $5,000, two break and enters, and seven other incidents.
Icy collision
On January 28, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a motor vehicle collision that occurred on Main Street in Canora in front of the Pharmacy. A vehicle was backing out of a parking stall when another vehicle heading southbound collided with the vehicle backing up. Icy roads were a contributing factor to the collision. Alcohol was determined to not be a factor and no charges were laid.
Buchanan theft
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a theft complaint on January 29 from the Buchanan Co-Op. The incident was recorded on store video footage. The suspect paid for two chocolate bars and hid a bottle of liquor in their jacket and did not pay for it. The suspect was identified and later paid for the bottle of alcohol. Criminal charges for theft were not pursued.
Usherville accident
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles near Usherville on January 29. A vehicle had been parked on the shoulder and the occupant was collecting firewood when their vehicle was struck by another vehicle. No injuries were reported and the collision was due to multiple vehicles on the highway at the time and poor road/weather conditions.
Suspicion in Canora
On January 30, Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a suspicious person complaint on Fifth Avenue in Canora. The male suspect was wearing camo pants and a black jacket and appeared to be taking photographs of houses. RCMP made patrols and did not locate the suspect.
Flag theft
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a theft that occurred on February 1 at the Kelsey Ecological site near the Lillian River bridge. An HBC flag was stolen from the site which has been an ongoing problem. If you have any information regarding the theft, please contact the Canora RCMP. Your information will remain anonymous.
Dangerous driving
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a driving complaint involving a black Dodge Ram pickup truck that was all over the road southbound on Highway No. 9 on February 2. Yorkton RCMP assisted and located the suspect vehicle and determined the driver to be sober. No charges were laid in this incident.
All-night dancing
On February 2, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received multiple phone calls from a complainant in Canora wanting to report his neighbours for dancing outside his house all night long. Police were unable to determine if dancing actually occurred. This matter remains under investigation.
Residential theft
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a break and enter to a residence on Main Street in Canora on February 3. A suspect was identified. Numerous items were stolen including a TV, air compressor and tools. The investigation is still ongoing.
