The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 20 calls during the week of January 21 to January 28, some of which included: four traffic offences, one impaired driver, six other provincial statutes, one assault, one break and enter, and seven other incidents.
Sturgis dispute
On January 21, 2021, Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a disturbance in Sturgis. Police provided mediation to the occupants of the residence who were having trouble with civilly resolving ongoing issues between themselves and their current living arrangements.
No emergency
Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a 911 hang-up on January 21 at a business located on Railway Avenue in Canora. RCMP attended and did not find any signs that the business was broken into or that there was any emergency inside the business.
Suspicious person
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a suspicious person on Third Avenue East in Canora on January 22. RCMP attended and identified the suspect who had recently purchased a residence and produced a key to enter the premise. This matter was not criminal in nature.
Driving complaint
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint on Highway No. 9 involving a truck that had passed another vehicle on a double solid line on January 22. RCMP investigated and were unable to lay a ticket due to insufficient grounds to support the charge.
Family dispute
On January 22, Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a residence in Preeceville for a family dispute. RCMP spoke with the occupants and determined nothing criminal transpired and that there was an argument/disagreement over a laptop.
False alarm
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a False Alarm on January 24 at a business on Main Street in Sturgis. RCMP attended and confirmed there was no emergency.
Vehicle in ditch
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway No. 9 south of Canora on January 24. A Chevrolet Cavalier had hit the ditch and became stuck. RCMP attended and identified the driver of the vehicle who was impaired by alcohol. The driver was arrested and brought to the Canora detachment for breath samples. The driver was subsequently charged criminally for refusing to provide a breath sample.
Unhelpful caller
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint on January 25 from an intoxicated female caller requesting police locate her niece in Canora. The caller refused to answer questions and then accused police of not doing their job. Canora Detachment would like to remind the public we can not read minds and that we might have to ask a few questions to determine the best course of action and response to the complaint.
Unwanted guest
On January 26, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of an unwanted person living inside a residence in Preeceville. Police attended and determined the matter to be civil.
