Canora/Sturgis RCMP activity report

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 160 calls for service from July 17 to August 6, some of which included: 66 traffic offenses, 17 provincial statutes, three traffic accidents, three break and enters, two frauds, six mischiefs, six thefts, five utt

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 160 calls for service from July 17 to August 6, some of which included: 66 traffic offenses, 17 provincial statutes, three traffic accidents, three break and enters, two frauds, six mischiefs, six thefts, five uttering threats, seven impaired drivers, five assaults, one sexual assault, and one murder.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP would like to advise the public that effective September 3, Canora Court matters will be temporarily moved to Yorkton Provincial Court due to COVID restrictions until further notice.

Crystal Lake damage

On the evening of July 10 and the early morning of July 11, several properties were damaged at Crystal Lake. At this time the RCMP continue to gather evidence and are asking for assistance from the public.Ìý

Canora fight

On July 17 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a fight between two adult males at a residence in Canora. Prior to RCMP arriving, one of the males, believed to be intoxicated, departed the residence in a vehicle. RCMP members were unable to locate the vehicle.

Fireworks complaints

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to several complaints in the area about fireworks СÀ¶ÊÓƵ set off within town limits or at lake resorts. The RCMP would like to remind people to be courteous of their neighbours as many times small children or people who need to wake up early and start work are СÀ¶ÊÓƵ woken due to these fireworks. Fireworks are not permitted to be set off in public or residential areas.

Boat drinking

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received several complaints about people drinking on boats at various lakes in the area. The RCMP would like to remind people that drinking is not permitted on boats located in public lakes and people should never drink and boat. Due to these complaints Canora/ Sturgis RCMP partnered with Saskatchewan Conservation Officers on enforcing drinking and boating laws at Good Spirit Lake over the August long weekend. RCMP ran numerous sobriety check stops over the weekend to prevent drinking and driving. RCMP and SERM members checked boaters on the lake and civilians on the public beaches. Police educated the public and poured out any alcohol that was located. Police also issued over a dozen tickets to people drinking alcohol while boating on the lake.

Intoxicated couple

On July 22 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated male and female knocking on doors in Preeceville and asking for rides. RCMP attended but were unable to locate the individuals. RCMP received a second call on July 23 of a male and a female sleeping on the side of Highway No. 49. RCMP attended, woke the male and the female, and provided them a courtesy ride to Yellow Quill.

Preeceville break-in

On July 24 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint that the Bits and Bites Dairy Bar in Preeceville was broken into and approximately $1,000 in food was stolen. RCMP Identification Services attended and were able to obtain fingerprints from the scene.

Golf cart mischief

The Canora RCMP have received numerous complaints about golf carts driving on roads in communities and resorts. RCMP will be increasing patrols in the summer months in smaller communities and lake resorts to prevent individuals from driving ATVs, golf carts or any other powered vehicles on public roads or property. RCMP would like to remind the public that if caught, drivers could face fines and have their vehicles impounded. The RCMP would like to update the community about the laws in the Traffic Safety Act that will be enforced surrounding golf carts:

•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Section 113.1 - unlawfully operate a golf cart on a street, road or highway - fine $80;

•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Section 113.1 (4)(a) - unlawfully operate a golf cart without a valid driver’s licence -Ìý fine $150; and

•ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Section 113.1 (4)(b) - operate a golf cart on a street, road or highway without insurance - fine $95.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP would also like to advise the public that there will be zero tolerance to driving a golf car with open alcohol.

Intoxicated Canora female

On July 25 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated female outside a hotel in Canora. The female was offered a ride home numerous times which she declined. She then attempted to walk away from the hotel but had a very difficult time walking. The female was then arrested and lodged in RCMP cells but not before vomiting on herself and in the back seat of the police car.

Stolen trailer

On July 27 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a U-Haul trailer parked at the Sturgis Campground with Arizona plates that had been there for several days. RCMP attended and determined that the U-Haul trailer had been stolen out of Calgary.

Stolen vehicle on tracks

On July 29 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a vehicle stolen in Kamsack that was travelling towards Canora. RCMP members were able to intercept the stolen vehicle which ended up hitting the ditch and driving onto the railroad tracks and getting hung up (see photo).Ìý The driver of the vehicle was impaired and was taken into custody for the theft of the vehicle along with numerous driving offences. The driver was remanded in custody until he could make a court appearance.

Canora disturbance

On July 30 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of an intoxicated male in his boxers yelling at everyone including children at the Dairy Bar in Canora. RCMP attended the scene and located the intoxicated male who had fallen down on the ground while riding his bike and was struggling to get back to his feet. RCMP members spoke with people at the Dairy Bar who were happy to hear that he would no longer be a problem.

Flag theft

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP are investigating the theft of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) flag from the Henry Kelsey memorial off Highway No. 9 between Sturgis and Preeceville. The theft occurred between the evening of July 23 and early morning on July 26. This is the third incident where an HBC flag has been stolen from the Henry Kelsey memorial within the last year. The value of both flags is $166.50. Canora/Sturgis RCMP is requesting anyone with information about this or any other incident to contact the Canora/Sturgis RCMP by calling 306-563-4700.
