聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 Grade 4 students of Canora Junior Elementary School had a chance to combine learning and fun by attending Yorkton鈥檚 2016 Harvest Showdown.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The event was organized by the Yorkton Exhibition, and all 36 students were accompanied by their teachers, Arlene Lozinski and Scott Vaughan to Yorkton on November 4.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 At the Harvest Showdown, students were divided into two groups to tour the agriculture event and to find more information that related to their studies in social studies and science.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭he students have been learning about land and agriculture in social studies and habitats in science. The Harvest Showdown supports the Grade 4 curriculum on many levels, which made the trip that much more valuable,鈥 Vaughan said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The different exhibits at the Harvest Showdown not only allowed the students to learn about the aspects of agriculture and farming鈥檚 importance to Saskatchewan and to the world, but also allowed them to meet animals, such as cows, pigs, horses, sheep, chickens and goats.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淢y favourite part was learning about the horses and how farmers can use the horse's teeth to know how old the horse is,鈥 mentioned one student when asked about meeting the animals.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Students also learned about the crops that are commonly grown in Saskatchewan, such as canola, wheat and barley. The students found it 鈥渋nteresting to learn about all the things farmers do,鈥 and one student said it was fun to learn about the province the students live in.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淎griculture is important to everyone,鈥 said one student when asked about the learning experience.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭he Harvest Showdown provided a great opportunity for the students to gain some real life hands-on experience which will benefit them in their everyday studies at CJES,鈥 Vaughan said.
