Two members of the Canora squadron No. 566 of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets competed in Yorkton for the zone stage biathlon competition.

Two members of the Canora squadron No. 566 of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets competed in Yorkton for the zone stage biathlon competition.

Jamie Kastryniuk, a Level 1 cadet, and Juan Mesa-Castaneda, a Level 3 cadet, travelled to York Lake Trap Club in Yorkton to represent the Canora junior male biathlon team, according to their captain, Lt. Darren Paul.

Kastryniuk and Mesa-Castaneda competed against 45 other cadet competitors from Melville, Preeceville and Oxbow. The zone stage, which is the second competition stage after a local stage and before the provincial and national stages, consists of a run-and-shoot format where cadets run and shoot air rifles at targets placed 10 metres away.

Though they did not place in the event this year, Paul said the two received biathlon pins that will be worn on their uniforms.

The cadet biathlon program focuses on promoting physical fitness, sportsmanship, fair play and marksmanship skills while providing a personal challenge and building the self-esteem of competitors, said information from the Air Cadets’ website.
