Academic awards presented during Sturgis graduation program

The Sturgis Composite High School graduates were introduced by Brad Cameron, principal, as they entered the high school gymnasium with their parents during the school鈥檚 graduation exercises on May 24. A brief history of their school life was shared.

The Sturgis Composite High School graduates were introduced by Brad Cameron, principal, as they entered the high school gymnasium with their parents during the school鈥檚 graduation exercises on May 24.

A brief history of their school life was shared. When all grads were seated on stage, Sherry Lesser led the singing of O Canada with Val Hallick as organist.

Mark Forsythe, superintendent of education for the Good Spirit School Division (GSSD), recited the message from the Ministry of Education.

The presentation of scrolls was narrated by Michael Andrusko, who told a story about each grad while Cameron presented the scrolls.

The academic awards are presented to graduates who have achieved an 80 per cent or higher average in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Kristen Peterson and Meghan Hurlburt presented the academic awards.

Graduate Kara Pasiechnik achieved an 81 percent average overall.

Graduate Mikayla Gregory achieved an 81 per cent average in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Graduate Sierra Meroniuk received an academic award with an 88 per cent average.

Graduate Audrey Vargas achieved a 94 per cent average in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Graduate Garrett Bazuik was the top graduate who received an academic award with a 95 per cent average.

Graduate Garrett Bazuik received the male athlete award.

Graduate Sierra Meroniuk was presented the female athlete award.

Graduate Zachary Mitchell was the winner of the fighting heart award.

Graduate Jalen Bayer received the spirit award.

The most improved student award was presented to graduate Isagani Puyos Jr.

Graduates Jalen Bayer and Isagani Puyos Jr. were each presented with a congeniality award.

Graduates were acknowledged and presented with scholarships during the scholarship and awards portion.

Graduate Mikayla Gregory was presented with the Sturgis Museum scholarship for $250.

Graduate Audrey Vargas received the Sturgis School Community Council scholarship for $200. Vargas also received the Canora Ambulance Care scholarship for $500.

Graduate Jalen Bayer received the Sturgis Kinette Club scholarship for $300.

Graduate Kara Pasiechnik received the Gateway Co-op, Sturgis branch scholarship for $200.

Graduate Isagani Puyos Jr. received the Sturgis Community Bingo scholarship for $300.

Graduate Sierra Meroniuk received the Sturgis Kinsmen Herb Larson Memorial scholarship for $400. Meroniuk also received the Prairie Soil Services scholarship for $500.

Graduate Audrey Vargas received the Preeceville Hospital Auxiliary bursary for $300.

Graduate Garrett Bazuik received the Town of Sturgis scholarship for $500. Bazuik also received the Crossroads Credit Union scholarship for $500.

Brad Cameron presented the District Governor General Medal to Cole Kowalchuk who is a 2018 Sturgis graduate.

Cameron was also the guest speaker, followed by a slide presentation prepared by graduates Mikayla Gregory and Audrey Vargas.

Graduate Sierra Meroniuk gave the valedictory address.

Brad Cameron gave the closing remarks which were followed by the grand march, under the direction of Kristen Peterson.
