Working together

The organizers of the third annual Working Together Career Fair & Conference on February 9 are hoping to do more than just present students with career and educational options.

The organizers of the third annual Working Together Career Fair & Conference on February 9 are hoping to do more than just present students with career and educational options.

"It's all about bringing youth together to inspire them about their futures," says Glorianne Kada, a career councillor with Dreambuilders Learning Centre, one of the organizations behind the career fair.

A multicultural event, the Working Together fair draws students from all of Yorkton's surrounding First Nations communities as well as Yorkton's own two high schools.

"What makes our career fair a little bit different than any other career fair students might have experienced is that we start off with a First Nations-style grand entry," says Kada.

Elders and dignitaries will enter at the start of the day in a 小蓝视频 featuring music by the Starblanket First Nation's Red Dog Drum Group. A prayer from an Elder will officially open the event.

Each year, career fair attendees tour display booths from employers, colleges, and universities in the morning and listen to aboriginal motivational speakers in the afternoon.

"We always try to get role models for these kids to look up to, to inspire them and show them that they can be anything they want to be," Kada says.

Currently, professional wrestler Wavell Starr is scheduled to speak about his athletic career. Organizers are seeking a female speaker for a second session in the afternoon.

About 30 displayers and 200-300 students are expected to attend. The event happens February 9 at St. Mary's Cultural Centre from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.

The Working Together Career Fair is organized by a committee of members from Parkland College, Dreambuilders Learning Centre, Labor Force Development, Yorkton Tribal Council, Can-Sask Employment Services, and the Yorkton Industrial Career Centre.
