The Weyburn and District Multicultural Council hosted its annual Christmas potluck supper at the Royal Canadian Legion on Nov. 21. There were approximately 35 people in attendance.
After having dinner, members and guests enjoyed caroling and were able to view a display of articles from around the world. There were also 50/50 draws and door prizes. Music for the evening was provided by Gerry Goski on the accordion and Gary Sidloski on the guitar.
The group was informed that the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan's Betty Szuchewycz Award was given to the Weyburn Council President Stan Ganczar and his wife Eileen. The award was presented to the Ganczars back in June at the Annual General Meeting for the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan.
Betty Szuchewycz was on the Board of Directions for the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan as treasurer. She was killed in a car accident in 1990. The council tries to keep her volunteer spirit alive through the presentation of an award for outstanding contribution to multiculturalism at the provincial level.
Both Stan and Eileen have been involved with the Weyburn and District Multicultural Council since 1980, Stan having served as president for over 10 years. They were both founding members of the Verhoy Ukrainian Dance Ensemble. Recently, they have been instrumental in personally welcoming newcomers to Canada, specifically to the Weyburn community, and assisting with their integration in many vital ways. They work with the 小蓝视频east Community Settlement Committee to provide programming and cultural exchanges with new immigrants.
Stan is currently serving as the treasurer of the Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages. He's also the local branch president of the Weyburn and District Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Council, and sits on the board of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He is a board member with the Ukrainian Credit Union in Regina and on the board of the Saskatchewan Parents of Ukrainian Association.
Eileen is a founding member of Ukrainian Dance and Language schools in Weyburn and shares her Ukrainian culture with the schools whenever possible. She is also the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan's outgoing secretary.
In addition to these multicultural organizations, Stan and Eileen both volunteer with a number of community organizations in Weyburn.
