Waste Reduction Week was unanimously proclaimed by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday for the week of Oct, 18-to-24.
Michael Buchholzer, Director of Environmental Services explained, "the Solid Waste Management Committee through Council has a mandate of zero waste to the landfill by 2025." He added having the week declared is a step toward that goal.
"Waste Reduction Week will focus on educating Canadians about over consumption. The Committee suggests we join other concerned Canadians planning activities that promote waste-free households, workplaces, schools and communities, "As a municipality, we are committed to conserving resources, protecting the environment and educating the community."
Buchholzer said the week is an annual event involving thousands across the country. He said the week, "aims to inform and engage Canadians about wasteful practices and their environmental and social ramifications.
"During the week the committee will be setting up tours of our landfill site and the Saskatchewan Abilities Centre. The committee will be informing citizens of new practices relating to the collection of community recycling bins, changes to the curbside recycling program as well as educating our community on recycling and material disposal methods."
