Yorkton Council declared Tourism Awareness Week for the week of Jun 6-12 at its regular meeting Monday.

The request for the designation was made by Tourism Yorkton president Neil Thom.

"As one of the leading industries in the province, Tourism Awareness Week is an opportunity to showcase our fine city as a world class tourism destination and recognize the tourism products, attractions and resources that generate millions of dollars in our local economy," said Thom.

Thom said there will be activities throughout the week to focus attention on the sector.

"The various activities planned for the week encourage an appreciation of the people in our community that drive an industry built on Saskatchewan's hospitality, culture and natural assets," he said.

Thom said locally Tourism Yorkton will start activities early.

"On Friday, May 28, we are going to start Tourism Awareness Week in Yorkton. During the 63rd International Yorkton Film Festival the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport will be attending a luncheon to recognize the sixty three years of contribution made by the festival," he said.

As for the actual week, other activities are already planned.

"Other activities include a Tourism Saskatchewan radio trivia contest, delivering hotline stickers, visitor guides and maps, along with conducting media interviews. There is an Open House planned for June 8, at the Visitor Reception Centre, and bus tours for employees involved in the tourism industry," he said.

A major announcement is planned for mid week.

"On Wednesday, June 9, we will be launching the revised edition of Yorkton's convention and event planning guide at the Gallagher Centre. The event planner guide provides a comprehensive overview of available facilities and services to facilitate local groups and individuals seeking to attract conventions and events to our City," said Thom.

On Friday, June 10 The Crops of the Parkland Walking Tour will conduct an open house.
