At the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association (AWSA) in Yorkton, watershed education is a key component of the organization's activities.

It is their belief that action is born through awareness that is fostered through education. As part of their ongoing educational campaign, which in the past, has included such initiatives as a poster contest for elementary students, classroom presentations, involvement in various "green" programming throughout the community, and various informational publications; the AWSA is in the midst of their latest offering, a provincial Multimedia and Video Contest entitled, "The Importance of Watersheds".

The contest is open to all students within grades 9 through 12 that go to school in the Assiniboine Watershed. Students are to create a maximum 3 minute informative multimedia or video presentation centered around the contest's theme. Acceptable formats include: .ppt - .wmv - .avi - flash - .mov. The top 2 local entries will receive $150 and $50 gift cards respectively.

The first place local entry will also have their work shown at the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds Conference on April 12th, 2011 in Humboldt and compete against 7 other watershed's top winner for the provincial grand prize of an Ipod Nano and a $1500 RESP to be used at a post-secondary education institute of their choice. "It's an excellent alternative to the traditional essay-format scholarship, and given the talent students have with computers nowadays, it can be a fun and easy means of securing a substantial post-secondary contribution," says AWSA coordinator Jesse Nielsen.
