The sod was turned last Tuesday on a new 24-unit condominium project in Yorkton.

The Morrison Pointe Condominium, located at 345 Morrison Drive is the first phase of a project by developers Remai Group, which is planned to contain three condos with 81-total units, explained Ron Skinner, manager of Royal LePage Premier Reality in the city. Royal LePage Premier Reality is the exclusive marketer of the units.

The project, when complete in about 10-months, will have seen a development of about $5 million, said Skinner.

Skinner said the project has taken time to develop.

"This whole process started about three years ago," he said, adding he was meeting with the Remai Group on another matter when the discussion turned to the potential of doing a condominium in Yorkton.

"Then it was making an offer on the land from the city," he said, adding that took time "because there was a process to go through."

It was in late 2008 they held a public meeting on the project, and 18-months later the sod was turned.

The new development is 'Adult Lifestyle' housing, which Skinner said essentially means no children. It is focused on people 40-plus as well.

"That was the niche we decided to target," he said.

Skinner said there is a market for such a development, noting the retiring yuppie, who may have a winter home in the United States, and want a second home here which is low maintenance. The condominium development allows for yard work to be done as part of the fees.Young professionals also like the convenience.

"Or if working on the road, the last thing they may want to do is come home and cut grass six-inches high," he said.

Eleven of the units have been pre-sold. Skinner said once this development markets, a second 24-unit building in planned, followed by a third 33-unit one.
